Sonata - Example 1: Movement I, Measures 1-9

Stylistic Influence: The bass line mimics a walking bass. It functions just as much as a component of rhythm and direction as it does harmony. Like most jazz bass lines, it quite often serves to create a pattern. In this case, the bass moves by fourths (including both perfect and augmented fourths) in m. 1, and moves by octaves in m. 2. In m. 6, it moves chromatically downward.
